You love traveling, but you don’t want to head out without your pup. Dogs are great road trip companions, and having your favorite pal around can make your vacation that much more memorable.
But if you’re not planning to go on a truly dog-friendly vacation, such as hiking or camping, what can you do with your pooch all day without leaving him hanging around your rental?
Thanks to dog-lovers such as yourself, dog-friendly attractions are becoming more popular in New York City, allowing those trusty companions to accompany their owners all over the city. Here are some of our favorites:
Cafes
You both need to eat, right? And what better way to get your nosh on than together, among other furry friends?
Boris & Horton
195 Avenue A
Owned by a father and daughter team of dog owners, Boris & Horton is the city’s first official dog-friendly coffee shop. Enjoy a selection of espresso beverages, vegetarian snacks and light meals, and beer and wine in the evenings while taking selfies with your pooch.
Boris & Horton’s dining room is split into human-only and pup-friendly sides, so you can stop by for a visit even if your pet isn’t with you!
Barking Dog
1678 Third Ave.
The aptly named Barking Dog is one of the city’s favorite dog-friendly stops. From the specialty dog watering fountain out front to the welcoming atmosphere, dogs (and people!) of all ages can find something to enjoy here.
Barking Dog is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but locals say their Sunday brunch is the best around, so don’t miss it!
LIC Bar
45-58 Vernon Blvd.
What’s a day in the city without a little night cap? At LIC Bar, your pup can enjoy the night life atmosphere right along with you! This gorgeous century-old bar welcomes dogs both indoors and on its patio in warm weather.
Add a little extra fun to your visit by stopping in during one of the bar’s many live music, trivia, or live reading nights.
Attractions
Everyone’s got to eat, but nothing’s better than a little fun. Of course, you can take in the outdoor sights such as Central Park and the Empire State Building with your pup. But when the weather’s a little too chilly to spend much time outdoors, here are a few ideas of things you can both enjoy inside.
William Secord Gallery
29 W. 15th St., 4th Floor
What’s better than being able to take your dog into an art gallery with you? Being able to enjoy portraits of dogs with your dog! Established in 1990, the gallery exhibits and sells 19th- and 20th-century animal art.
And if you want a really special keepsake from your trip, you can commission a portrait of your pooch!
Seastreak Ferry
Departs from 35th St. in Manhattan
Enjoy some great views of the city together by riding the Seastreak Ferry from 35th Street to Wall Street. Leashed dogs are allowed on board, so you and Fido can see the sights together. For a longer ride and to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty, take the Seastreak Ferry all the way to Atlantic Heights.
Small dogs also are allowed on the Staten Island Ferry if you want to take a free ride.
Shopping
There are a variety of pet-friendly stores throughout the city. Big-name stores such as Tiffany’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Michael Kors, and Bloomingdales allow furry friends. Whether you’re searching for something special to commemorate your trip or just window-shopping, the city’s stores are great places to just let the hustle and bustle pass around you while you look at pretty things.
Many other stores allow pets; just ask nicely and respect the employee if you’re told no!
Doggy Daycare
Want to go to the theater for the evening or planning a destination that isn’t so dog-friendly? The city has doggy daycares where you can drop your furry friend off for a day of fun and socialization with other dogs so he can enjoy his day just as you’re enjoying yours!
Paws In Chelsea
145 W. 24th St.
Your pooch will be showered with attention and given the chance to meet new friends at this doggy daycare. Drop him off for a full day or a half day, see the sights, then enjoy a happy reunion when you come to pick him up!
Willow Pet Hotel
1926 Deer Park Avenue
Drop your dog off for a fun-filled day! Willow Pet Hotel offers one-on-one playtime sessions with your dog’s personal activities counselor, snack breaks, and indoor playtime. Bonus: They frequently add photos from their doggy daycare to their Facebook page, so you can check in on your furry friend on social media!
Whether you’re visiting for just a few days or a few weeks, New York City has all sorts of great things to offer you and your dog!
